Description
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring expanded mineral that improves water retention, aeration and nutrient availability in any growing medium.
At a glance
- Suitable for: Seed starting, potting blends, plant cuttings, container gardens
How to use
- Seed starting: mix vermiculite with peat moss or seed starter at a 50:50 ratio for excellent moisture retention and aeration during germination.
- Potting mixes: add 10-25% vermiculite to your potting soil to improve water retention and prevent compaction.
- Soil amendment: work vermiculite into clay or sandy soils to improve structure, drainage, and moisture-holding capacity.
- Propagation: use pure vermiculite or a vermiculite/perlite mix for rooting cuttings – the moisture retention encourages root development.
- Bulb storage: layer bulbs and tubers in dry vermiculite to protect them from moisture loss and temperature fluctuations during dormancy.
Storage and safety
